Making a commitment to a life of discipleship is no light matter, and the Companions respect the time and discernment needed to join the confraternity. For full membership in the community, one must be a member in good standing in the Catholic Church, which includes all of the communities in full communion with the Holy See. Membership is not restricted to sex or marital status.
Each inquirer will be entrusted to the Steward of Discernment to prepare for Postulancy with the community. During the discernment period, there will be written conversation and reflection about why God is leading you to the Companions. Once it is discerned to enter the next step of Postulancy, a written letter stating your desire to enter Postulancy must be sent to the Steward of the Community for reception.
After Discernment, each serious inquirer will be entrusted to the Steward of Postulants for further discernment and formation. The Postulancy will last about a year. The Postulancy course begins each Fall. During this time, the Postulant will begin living according to the community’s rule of life and working with a mentor for discerning their service within the Church. Each Postulant will have full access to the life of the confraternity. Once the Postulancy period is complete, each Postulant must submit a letter of desire to the Steward of the Community to join the Companions in full membership.
After the Postulancy, each potential member must submit a letter of desire to join the Companions as a full member to the Steward of the Community for reception. New members will profess their Baptismal vows before their priest before the altar and pray the Companions prayer of dedication to be fully enrolled in the confraternity. Full members will have voting rights in the confraternity.
Friends of the Companions
Not everyone called to the Companions of The Way is a Catholic Christian. Our non-Catholic brothers and sisters in Christ are wholeheartedly welcome to participate in the life of the confraternity through our Friends of the Companions program. This program is open to all Christians baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Friends of the Companions may take on the rule of life and wear the community cross. They will have full access to the life of the confraternity. There is a similar one-year postulancy period as with Catholic members above. Each Friend will be entrusted to the Steward of Friends the Companions. Inquirers must submit a letter of desire to join the Friends of the Companions to the Steward of the Community for reception.
